First Step for Christian Writers

You have loved writing ever since you were a child. You’ve always been told that you were good at it. You may have even started a blog once or twice, but didn’t keep up with it. Because life happens! You start accomplishing other goals in your life whether personally or professionally and writing was just for fun anyway.

Until one day (or maybe progressively over time) God makes it clear - writing is a calling and He wants you to DO something with it. Well now you are married with kids and schedules and meal planning and pick ups and drop offs and playdates and date night and homework help and laundry and how in the WORLD will you find time to write too?

Except that God’s given you a message. A specific message that only you can share because He uniquely created you and your story. And you can’t shake that feeling that He’s asking you to do this. But you have no idea where to start.

Sound familiar?

I was in the same boat! And I didn’t always listen to that prompting of the Holy Spirit to make writing a priority. So from experience, this is the number one piece of advice I can give you:

Prayer is essential to fulfilling the call that God has placed on your life.

Pray at all times, but I’ve found that one of the most effective times is at the beginning of a writing session. Inviting God into the space and asking Him to give you the words to say is like dedicating the writing to Him from the beginning.

You can have all the tools, reminders, schedules, and coaching in the world, but if your writing isn’t infused with prayer, you won’t get nearly as far and you’re limiting what God can do in and through you.

Writers are often transformed by the writing process! Just because God has a message He wants you to tell doesn’t mean that there isn’t anything else for you to learn from that message yourself.

Embrace perpetual growth and start your writing by dialoguing with Him. He is always there.
